We had a lovely breakfast. So much stuff including bacon, eggs, sausages, beans – plus cereal, pastries, coffee, juice, fruit. It was lovely. They had regular European breakfast stuff as well as English Breakfast.
We headed off toward the Rijksmuseum Museum. We saw lots of lovely buildings and canals along the way. We also dropped off our laundry on the way.
When we got to the museum, there was a music group playing some lovely music – it was a violin, 2 accordions, and a balalaika. We listened to them for a while and then got our tickets for the museum = we had a 45 minute wait so we went out to the garden and sat and talked. Gorgeous gardens and buildings.
Headed into the museum. Such a cool building. It’s a mix of art gallery and museum. We started at the top. We spent quite a long time looking at everything. There were lots of Rembrandts and Dutch Masters. There was only one Van Gogh. It was a rich experience. We discovered a little over half way thru that it was closing in an hour so we had to speed thru the rest of it. There were lots of blond Jesuses. There were several Peace Out Jesus’s. I didn’t realize how much the Dutch were involved in slavery and opium. It was very interesting. It was good for me to be back in a gallery/museum.
We headed back to pick up our laundry and then had the most amazing french fries from Oma’s Friet Amsterdam. We got a family bag of frites – huge amount for a really good price. We were all pretty knackered. Lots of steps.
After a bit of a rest, we headed back out to get something to eat. We were looking for pancakes, but ended up getting chimney cakes with ice cream at Chimney Cake Café. So good! More exploring and then we went for a drink at our hotel. I really wanted a Snowball which is made with Advocaat which is a Dutch liqueur. I asked our waitress if they had it, and she denied all knowledge of such a drink or liqueur. It was so funny. Ended up with a beer. Thus ended the hottest day of the year in Amsterdam so far. The temps are supposed to drop overnight.
